Grief and Loss Counselling

Grief counselling focuses on working through the grieving process related to a major loss. Grief counselling is also called bereavement counselling. The term “bereavement” usually is used only when referring to the loss of a person through death.

Grief counselling may include:

Learning about grief and what to expect when grieving.

In grief counselling, individuals learn about the grieving process, including expected emotions and thoughts. They also learn to distinguish between grief and other conditions, such as depression, which may arise from grieving.

Expressing feelings.

In grief counseling, individuals are often encouraged to openly express their feelings, regardless of what those emotions may be. Some people may find it difficult to convey their emotions and may be urged to discuss their loss or find alternative ways of expressing themselves. For instance, someone who is grieving may be advised to have a conversation with the departed individual as if they were present. Other techniques that can help individuals express their emotions include writing letters about their loss or addressing the departed person, reminiscing by looking at photos, or visiting the grave of a deceased loved one.

Developing a new identity.

In grief counselling, individuals are provided with techniques and strategies to help them navigate the challenging process of reconstructing their sense of self following a significant loss. This can encompass exploring self-identity, acknowledging changed priorities, and finding meaning and purpose in life after experiencing profound grief.

How can we help?

Everyone will experience grief and loss at some point in their lives. People usually think of grief and loss as associated with the death of a person. However, we feel grief with any type of loss. We need to grieve unexpected changes and unmet expectations. Grief is a natural and normal response to loss.
